Teal Stripe was once referred to as “bubble crust” by a trusted friend who has good opinions on music. The term perfectly encapsulates the synthesis of blistering distorted guitar, sugary melodies and acerbic lyrics that Teal Stripe is best known for.
The band was originally helmed by Dallas TX native Alex Atchley and life-long friend and frequent collaborator, Jack Harris. As a duo they confounded audiences across America with their drum machine backed, twin guitar, high energy performances. Their 2nd album, Forget, is set to release on October 21st, 2025 on CD, Bandcamp, and later, some select streaming platforms.
Forget picks up even before their first record, Heavy Metal, even began. Tracks like “Lucie” and “The Young You” date back to around 2008, being re-workings of older projects given major structural rehabilitation from their low-fidelity four track origins. “Keep Me Warm” was demo’d finished so soon after Heavy Metal was released, that it was in the live set during the subsequent tour to promote the album. Even “We Had Plans Tonight,” a simple song about the travails of working class romance, was almost left on the scrapheap of a now defunct band of Atchley’s, while the lyrics to the thematic linchpin, “Philip K Dick,” were initially penned for another 86’d project from the past.
Newer tracks like “I Want to Watch You Suffer,” “Philistine,” “Sandman,” “Something’s Missing,” and “Run and Hide” are scattered across the album alongside the old, molding into a coherent listening experience–one that treads heavily in the past to pave the way for the future of the band.
Harris has since departed the band to focus on other projects, leaving Atchley to finish Forget with other life-long friends and collaborators. That’s how the band started, so it might as well stay consistent. Contributors include Donovan Ford (Skimp, Sacred Attention), Kara and Stephanie Buchanan (The Crystal Furs), Sam Swanson (Blank-Men), Savannah Sherer (Inverted Candles), Cameron Rosewicz (Doink). Rounding out the guest support is Shayne Lechelt and Rebecca Tafline who deliver absolute show-stopping vocal support on key tracks “Something’s Missing” and “Philip K Dick.” Of course, Harris has contributions to the album, bridging the gap between where Teal Stripe began, and where they will go in the future.
The most significant contribution was the mixing and mastering work of Garry Brents (Cara Neir, Sallow Moth, Memorrhage, and many others) who took inconsistently, unprofessionally recorded tracks and meticulously polished them into the album’s crystalline final form.
Now, the band continues as a five piece outfit with members of other Dallas and Denton based bands such as Inverted Candles, Bog and Average Life Expectancy to carry the torch of so-called bubble crust.
